Program Notes
Winter Nights is a minimalism-inspired string quartet piece that paints the picture of winter nights. White snowfalls against the backdrop of a dark, night sky would be a typical sight, but as someone who grew up in a tropical country with no winter season, it was a magical experience for me. This piece juxtaposes the tranquillity of snowfalls on the outside with the excitement and dreams of snow on the inside.
At the start of the piece, four main pitches were used across the string quartet in various arrangements, rhythmic patterns, and articulations to feature steady snowfall, wind, and water dripping in serenity. The musical elements of each line harmonize, interact, and affect one another in subtle patterns, much like the elements that form consistent snowfalls. However, as the piece nears its conclusion, several patterns are broken up and new pitches are introduced. Finally, the piece concludes with gradually diminishing “snowfalls.”
