Program Notes
Lost in Translation is a brass quintet which was inspired by the observation of how a single message can be orally transmitted from one person to another, becoming increasingly different after each iteration, and finding itself with a drastically different meaning at the end (like the game “Telephone”). Each instrument in this piece represents a voice, which takes turns interpreting a short idea, discussing, and developing the parts of the idea with other voices. By the end of the piece, a full-blown 12-tone-inspired idea is presented as the result of the “discussion” between the instruments. The piece also has aleatoric elements that are up for the players’ interpretation and for the chance of being literally “lost in translation.”
